I remember my dad telling me that after WWII, Germany's currency was worthless. So they had a "Banking Holiday" closing the banks for one day, cleared all debt(ie: mortgages)and when the banks reopened the currency had some worth. We need to re-evaluate our trade agreements. Right now they are more beneficial to the countries we trade with and killing our economy. They are one sided , unfair and just not right. They are set up to profit individuals not the country. Also even though the environment is important so are families and our economy. Look at Oregon and the lumber industry there. Shut down over a rat and an owl that were later found out to live just fine . Now the lumber is taken 7 miles out processed by another country and resold to us at a huge profit back to us costing us billions a year. California now want trucking companies to redo their fleet driving them to other states and other countries. Throwing money at this current problem will not fix the problem. The fundamental problem with our economy is that most of the trust in our systems has vanished and without trust, people do not want to invest, banks do not want to give out loans, and credit companies cannot operate. The main goal behind our strategy right now, as a government and as Americans, should be to restore trust where is has been shattered. Without a broad enough view of the market system, it would be beyond me to make suggestions as to how to go about this, but the efforts do not need to be large in scope. Instead of the Fed buying up all the "bad" mortgage backed securities: Create a database of the MBS issues cross-referenced with the MBS owners. Create a swapping pool so that like shares of MBS can be swapped between owners so that each MBS series ends up in the hands of one business entity. Once a given MBS issue is solely owned by one entity, allow them to dissolve that MBS corporation and assume the ownership of the individual mortgages. They can then sell the individual mortgages on the open market or keep them as they see fit. The government would only need to act as broker and "market maker" instead of taking on the whole load. Such a process would also require exception from existing SEC anti-trust rules.

a friend pointed out to me today, if they advertised the whole national health thing from a different angle , like global warming to climate change, it would be far less threatning. we came up with federal catastrophic insurance. catastrophic insurance already exists today. eveyone would have a high deductable plan that is differentialy subsidized by the gov. it kicks in when our other plans exaust. and in cases where there is no other plan might have a wrap around option that covers them more. these are cheap plans due to the high deductable. most people this would surfice with a pretax health savings account. this pays all expences up to the deductable and is payed for by us by the savings from the catastrophic plan. poor people would g Read More »
