WELFARE SYSTEM
Posted by kimmers42 579 days ago (Suggestion)
My suggestion is that anyone who receives government assistance should be liable to take a drug test to receive that money. (i.e.: Welfare Most of Americans have to take a drug test in order to receive a job. I feel its only fair that people getting government money (which I pay taxes into). There are a lot people who abuse the system. The system is suppose to be there to help people and thei

Legalize Marijuana
Posted by toorestless 581 days ago (Suggestion)
You know somebody was going to say it first...
Legalize marijuana for sale at federal cannabis stores, but charge a high amount per ounce. Use the proceeds to fund drug rehabilitation centers for harder drugs like alcohol, heroin, cocaine and others. Use any excess proceeds to fund other health care programs. Read More »

Tax Cigarattes
Posted by theman 581 days ago (Suggestion)
Why don't we tax ciggarattes and use that money to fund various health ventures? It's about time people wisen up and quit anyway. Now is not a time to spend money on things that hurt you.

Single Payor Healthcare
Posted by mlafaro1 577 days ago (Suggestion)
I have been a nurse for nearly 16 years. I am a Nurse Practitioner with experience in Primary Care, Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. The number one predictor of health status in this country is wealth. Coverage for a family of four now averages about $12,000 annually. The complicated nature of our multi-payer system adds substantial cost. A single-payer system would make healthcare equitable for all. Pharmaceutical companies are making huge profits at the expense of citizens, those without insurance coverage pay the highest price for services and medications...the stories that i could tell regarding this are innumerable.
Americans need to take a serious look at our current system and an open-minded look at systems in other countries that have proved successful...otherwise we Read More »

Remove the "Donut Hole" for Medicare Prescription Drugs
Posted by nfromQueens 579 days ago (Suggestion)
Once you are on Medicare and reach out of pocket expenses over $2500 for prescription medications, you have to pay a much higher premium until you reach the catastrophic level. People with life threatening illnesses have to pay double for prescriptions in this category. It’s not fair since these people pay their premiums just as do others that are not on Medicare. In one case, my friend paid $360 out of pocket for the same drug that cost $150 just before they reached this “donut hole.” Civilians that are working do not have this ridiculous clause in their prescription coverage.

Ban Prescription Drug Advertisements
Posted by KenKen 565 days ago (Suggestion)
How much of prescription drugs costs goes to support television and magazine advertisement? And, why do they exist? Are they trying to go around primary healthcare providers to drive up demand for new drugs by appealing directly to the masses?
Like tobacco ads, the US Govt. could ban prescription drug advertisements. This *should* lower the cost of drugs, a big component of overall insurance/healthcare costs.
(Additional Beneficial: No longer scare people with descriptions of possible/severe side effects of a drug.) Read More »

Put National Health Care Into Action
Posted by CrimsonKing4 575 days ago (Suggestion)
If you want people to become self reliant, you have to pass National Health Care to those who can't afford it. If you want a country to run smoothly, you have to make sure you have a nation of healthy people, if you have a nation of broken down citizens, then they become dependent on the government. They need health care in order to be strong and employable. I had been affected by the government's administration in the past because I couldn't afford to get health care and I was ineligible for county health benefits because I no longer had young children. When I was working, my job did not offer health benefits.

Socialize Daycare
Posted by heretohelp 581 days ago (Suggestion)
In Europe, when you have a baby, a government assigned professional comes and helps you around the house, with laundry and your newborn. This would ensure that mothers could work and they would have a qualified professional helping them, not some criminal that requires you to setup a nanny cam before you feel safe.

I AM A SINGLE MOTHER OF A SPECIAL NEEDS SON (HE HAS SPINA BIFIDA, HYDROCEPHALUS, SEIZURE DISORDER, SCOLIOSIS, AND OTHER PROBLEMS) WHO DOES NOT RECEIVE SSI BECAUSE THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION SAYS I MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY.
WHAT IS "TOO MUCH MONEY" WHEN I AM THE ONLY ONE WORKING PAYING THE BILLS (LIGHT, GAS, CAR NOTE, T/P, HOUSE INSURANCE, CAR INSURANCE, ETC)? Read More »

Back to basics - eliminate support for fertility drugs that encourage multiple births
Posted by jeffreychun 559 days ago (Suggestion)
NPR on 2/23 highlights the indirect costs of fertility drugs which cause multiple births. These drugs are unneccessary and can be replaced by alternative treatments like acupuncture.
My wife is an acupuncturist and has had much success with assisting pregnancy. While this is not guaranteed, an acupuncturist focus is to improve the health system of a persons body to improve mother's ovulation regularity and improve chances for pregnancy. It also reduces infant mortality. It reduces the chance for unhealthy birth rates and mother's post natal depression.
All of these are side effects of fertility drugs and has heavy indirect cost to our health care system.

using tax money for stem cell research
Posted by jertotin 549 days ago (Suggestion)
If you want to let the research into embryonic stem cells to go forward, I think that you should not use federal money to do this. There are millions of Christians in the country who would argue that we shouldn't have to use our tax dollars to do it. Let the private sector use their own money. If this research finds a cure for something, are these companies going to reduce the cost of the treatment because they are funded with our tax dollars? I don't think so they will still charge us the highest amount possible because they are in it to make as much money as possible.

public option Medicare

The public option should be a gradual extension of Medicare to more of the population. Perhaps catastrophic coverage for all or coverage for children first. Not a brand new program.
