Hi! It has always seemed weird to me that the Army and Navy colleges have football programs, teams!!

I suggest that they eliminate football, and spend all that time and energy studying how to make PEACE in the world...how to eliminate the need for their colleges.

The dropout rate in our country is exuberant and it will continue unless something is done. Most of these students blame the high school they attended but yet have not found a way out of their situation. Although, they would like to go back to school they have no one nor any place to go to give them sincere direction. I have a way where I can help these students get back on the right track and Read More »
Little Johnny, a student in a "Regular Education" classroom, has trouble enunciating one or more words when he is asked to read a passage. One may quickly discover that little Johnny has not mastered ---or he has not been taught -- PHONICS!!!! Whenever I ask a parent if his/her child was taught phonics in first grade, the parent asks me: "What is phonics"?

How can an eighth grade teacher be expected to teach a class one of the core courses (i.e., social studies, science, language arts, math), when the student cannot read a sentence without "stumbling" throught the sentence? Students "stumble" through sentences because they are unable to enunciate one or more words in a particular sentence.

Please understand that I am not referring to students who have been diagnosed as "L Read More »

Leave No child Left behind, behind

Posted by tara 551 days ago (Suggestion)
Dear President Obama:

As the mother of a 4 year old, I have recently become engrossed in the Kindergarten application process in my city. We saw both public and private schools and have been made aware of, what I feel, is a HUGE issue.

I am an MSW, LCSW who is working as a Clinical Social Worker and I am also a mother of two wonderful, bright children. I work part time serving children and their monolingual (Spanish) families at a Child Guidance Clinic. While I am not a child development expert, I feel that my work as a clinician and my experiences as a mother make me knowledgeable in the role of play in the lives of children. As a child therapist, I would not be of service to my clients with out play. Play is how children learn about themselves and the world around them, how Read More »

We need education reform

Posted by Aladinbama 558 days ago (Suggestion)
As a teacher for the last 19 years I believe that we need to seriously restructure our public educational system. Where we are failing is not by our preparation for college, but in our preparation for life. We need to bring vocational/technical education down to the jr. high and high school levels.
A few years ago, I had a student that if you cut him, he would bleed motor oil. His grand dad built engines and raced, his dad built engines and raced and his dream was to build engines for race cars. As a junior in high school, he was already showing promise and success. In our current system, we are cheating kids like him. We are requiring them to take 4 years of each of the four core subjects in preparation for college. I agree that the core subjects are necessary, but the young man mention Read More »

Raise in Salary for Teachers

Posted by Claudia553 572 days ago (Suggestion)
Mr. President,
My son is a very bright young man. He is a junior in college and has a great rapport with children. He has said to me on more than one occasion that if he were to win the lottery that he would become a teacher. He hopes to be married and have children some day. He recognizes that to be a teacher in NYC on the current salary scale would put him at a disadvantage for giving his own family all that he had. I know that revamping the education system is something that you are interested in, but I honestly feel that we will NEVER attract the kind of teachers we need at the current salary that is being offered. Broad Based k-12 Computerized Classes

Posted by Pisano 576 days ago (Suggestion)
Third world countries have advanced technically recently in large part because of availability of self study computer classes which were made available to the masses there.

Here were we have more technology and money than any other county. We need to have someone select a common curriculum of core skills for all American children that can be delivered via an interactive self study program.

Not only would it save a lot of money, it would build a lot of skills while standardizing the skill set for American children.

Teachers sometimes cringe at the thought, but they will always have a place in this plan as for advanced classes will still need instructor monitors even in a computer based training environment.

The good news is there is already many good school course computer bas Read More »

Free Education: the time is now

When one looks at the overall health of an individual, they must take into account every aspect of health within that individual, as in the mind, body and soul.

There is something in the medical world called the Hippocratic oath, the essence of which basically means, “Harm thy patient not”. While anyone in the medical industry is supposed to follow these standards, this concept of “Harm thy patient not” reaches much deeper into other aspects of our health consisting of the mind and soul.

When we attend college and pay a large amount of money to allow people to provide us with the information that might one day help us provide sustenance for our families and friends, we essentially become patients. The professors teaching us become doctors of our minds and souls, as such we should e Read More »

Functional Education

Posted by bdgsd 576 days ago (Suggestion)
Mr. President,
As an inspired supporter and parent of 3 kids ( 2 grown and a new 2 yr old), I have personally in my own education and with my 2 grown kids watched the same process occur again and again for all of us and for most of my friends and schoolmates.
School is simply considered an obligatory task with the emphasis to pass the tests and graduate.
I have owned 5 vocational schools over 30+ years and have been so saddened to see the poor demonstration of spelling, grammar, study habits, etc from high school graduates.
After much study of this phenomenon it is clear to me that there simply is not much that our public education system has to truly attract students to want to learn. Read More »

Voter Education-- 'Civic' Education Campaign Needed

Posted by ybati 573 days ago (Suggestion)
A campaign to educate Americans on 'Civics' is needed. Many of us are ignorant about American Civics. I feel that it would be empowering for the U.S. citizens if we understood the function or roles of the different segments of government and their appendages-- i.e. Presidental Cabinet members etc....

I BELIEVE KNOWLEDGE OF 'CIVICS' WOULD EMPOWER VOTERS TO:

1) Be more discriminating and not have to rely solely on the media and pundits.

2)Hold the politicians accountable.

3)Enable voters to assess or question situations and ideas in an intelligent fashion.

4)Vote in a more nationalistic and less partisan manner. Read More »
President Obama, While I respect you as the President of the country, I do not think you understand education in this country. Too often, it is the teachers who are blamed and chastised for the poor academic performance of the students in this land. Teachers have a tremendous responsibility that many politicians could not begin to comprehend. If you want to "fix" what is wrong with education, begin where education should begin... at the home. People, who often have no clue about the strains that teachers endure, love to point their finger at teachers. What about politicians who continually neglect to see the parents' roles in student performance? Are they not to blame as well? I am a parent as well as an educator. I love my children.. the ones I birthed and the ones I teach. I Read More »

Please do not mess with the school hours

Posted by Cooper 305 days ago (Suggestion)
deal with school quality first!

I am in a rural school, and we need the farmer's school schedule, as many of us do work in the fields.

We also need to keep school hours where they are. Let me explain why: As a high schooler, I get up at six thirty, go to the bus at seven, and school starts by 8:05. I have five classes, two of which are core classes, common in every schedule, and at least three hand out daily homework.

I get home at four, which is considered quite early, as I know people who don't get home until six. We still have homework to do, and we don't get enough sleep as it is. (I have general insomnia, and I tend to get six to seven hours of sleep.)

So if you lengthen the school days as well, guess how much sleep the average teen will be getting then?
